Choose Me, No Choose Me

While I can't really choose an all time favorite, Iceburg does fullfill so many qualities of a great cutting garden rose. It blooms throughout the season often right up to the winter solstice. Many a holiday table has been graced by a few stems of Iceburg. It has a light delicate fragrance, bright green leaves and a perfect shade of white petals. How can I not choose it? At least this week....

My Grandmother’s Rose

Before my Grandmother's home was sold my brothers and I stole into her rose garden and made random cuttings of different unmarked roses. Some of the roses took and others didn't. This very vigorous and thorny rose is probably a rootstock that got away and was growing along with the graft. It is laden with flowers spring, summer and fall. Although I wouldn't go out of my way to plant a red rose this one is just the right shade of red and has a lovely easy petaled bloom.

Maurice Sendak 1928-2012

Maurice Sendak captured all our hearts. He understood children in such a perfect way. Cranky, happy, gruff, Mr. Sendak captured those feelings so perfectly. I loved these well worn books and still do. They are my first real memory of reading and what a happy world they opened up for me.

Spanish Lavender

The first appearance of Spanish lavender always reminds me of the summer yet to come. It is the first lavender of the season to bloom but sadly the flowers quickily fade. It looked particularly beautiful this evening at sunset.
